Some random Advent headlines from the New York Times:
December 8, 1941: “Japan Wars on U.S. and Britain; Makes Sudden Attack on Hawaii; Heavy Fighting at Sea Reported.”
December 3, 1954: “Final Vote Condemns M’Carthy, 67-22, for Abusing Senate and Committee.”
December 17, 1960: “127 Die as Two Airliners Collide over City.” “10 Brooklyn Houses Burn After Plane Hits a Church”
December 7, 1973: “Ford Sworn as Vice President.” “A Watershed for Nixon. Some Republicans in Congress Hope Ford Will Soon Be the 38th President.”
And in today’s Advent headlines: the results of the Georgia runoff, air strikes in Russia, and here in St. Louis, three former aldermen sentenced to prison for taking bribes.
Until Jesus’ comes, disturbing headlines will certainly continue. The world is not interested in the church or our observances. “In this world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Lord, we’re waiting to see Your victory! Please church, overcome the world's news by telling us clearly, telling us emphatically, that Advent is less preparation for Jesus’ birthday and far more anticipation of His final Advent to once and for all save us from this world’s news. Then we will see. “‘Surely I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).
