It took me some time to get used to bifocals. I remember being at a Brewers baseball game, old County Stadium, wanted to go out and get something to eat, but almost fell down the steps. Depth perception. Same with Advent. If you want to grow in faith, hope, endurance, and love this Advent, put on bifocals, even trifocals.
In the Gospel appointed for this Sunday, John the Baptist says, “Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.” A common way to hear John’s words goes something like this: John told the people to get ready for Jesus’ coming by repenting. The way for us to get ready for Christmas is to repent. Yes, I’ve sinned and need the Savior to be born. OK, true enough, but quite routine.
Depth perception changes that. “Prepare the way of the Lord” is not only repentance as preparation for His birthday. What's the motivation to repent after Christmas? “Prepare the way of the Lord” especially means get yourself ready to see Jesus when He appears in glory, His Second Advent. In that final, decisive Advent all things will become good, and just, and right. Near sight and far sight energizes me way more than only the coming birthday celebration.
Whenever I got a new set of eyeglasses, Dr. Herberts himself placed the frame on my nose and ears. I hope your pastor, aka the spiritual doctor, puts Advent depth perception on you this Sunday.
