“Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth” (Ecclesiastes 11:9).
I have called a virtual meeting of the Cinco de Meyer. The purpose of our meeting is to update Opa on your travels. “Christian, oldest grandson, where did you go?” “Europe, Opa.” “Wow! Tell our friends.” “My high school, Lutheran South, had a two-week tour of England, France, and Germany. Awesome!” “Christian, I bet you’re having an adjustment back under your parents’ roof.” No comment.
“Connor, grandson number 2, give us a report.” “I’m in Houston for our church’s National Youth Gathering.” “Excited?” “Yeah.” Connor doesn’t say much but I know he’s into this event, thousands and thousands of young people gathered there.
“And Nick, youngest of the Pittman branch of the Cinco, you were with me last week in Iowa. I enjoyed that.” “Yes, but now I’m spending a week in Washington, D.C., with my Bailey cousins. Flew out yesterday. We’re going to see the sights and have fun.”
“Our meeting is almost over. Let’s hear from the Bailey branch, Drew and Jake. Where have you been?” “Cancun, Opa.” “Cancun? Never been there, not sure where it is. Cancun?” “Opa, we met a dolphin named Madonna and rode on her back. Held onto her fins and she swam. Fun!”
“Thank you, boys. Now a closing devotion. I never had trips anything like that when I was a kid. I pray you will come to realize that you’re living lives most children in the world cannot imagine. ‘Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required’ (Luke 12:48). This Sunday in church we’ll hear about the Good Samaritan. That’s a travel story. When you believe in Jesus, you enjoy travel, but you always have an eye for people who are hurting. You don’t have to go far from home or church to see people who need our help. You are Jesus' hands and feet to hurting people. Amen."
