“I am small and of little account” (Psalm 119:141).
Yup, that’s me. Does the state highway department check with you before they decide to do construction on your route to work? Does the IRS contact you and say, “Short of money? Listen, we’ll just clean up government waste so you don’t have to pay as much.” Who does the world esteem? Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, President Biden, politicians and corporate bosses… Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. Them too. Self-absorbed stars, dysfunctional people media forces on us. And when trouble pounds little us, we can even feel “I am a worm” (Psalm 22:6).
“I am small and of little account.” Actually, I find that comforting. I am not a worm; I am Jesus’ little lamb. “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will” (Matthew 11:25-26). Our heavenly Father is like GPS. Wherever I am, day-by-day at home, away, knowing my surroundings or lost, I go to “maps” on my phone and the satellite finds me and shows me the way. "Turn to me and be gracious to me, as is your way with those who love your name. Keep steady my steps" (Psalm 119:132-133). The cattle on a thousand hills are his (Psalm 50:10). His eye is on the sparrow (Matthew 6:26). “Your heavenly Father knows” (Matthew 6:32). He "goes after the one who is lost until he finds it" (Luke 15:4). “He shall fold me to his breast, there within His arms to rest.”
Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to Thee, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly Thine, utterly dedicated unto Thee; and then use us, we pray Thee, as Thou wilt, and always to Thy glory and the welfare of Thy people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.”
(Psalm 119:141 and prayer from Book of Common Prayer. “I Am Jesus Little Lamb,” LSB 740).
