We all have times when we have nothing left within us, no spirit to keep on going. Those are dangerous times.
Richard Lischer tells about Amy, a 13-year-old member of his first congregation who had cerebral palsy. When Kathryn Kuhlmann brought her healing ministry to St. Louis, Amy went hoping for a miracle, but no, not to be. Still, Amy was in good spirits. Dr. Lischer writes, “You never go broke risking everything on God. The act of trusting is itself a replenishing activity, like loving or farming or writing. You can’t hold back your best for another occasion. If you give of yourself fully, there will always be more to give. Trusting makes for greater trust, not disillusionment or timidity. Amy taught me that. Or, I should say, I learned that from watching Amy smile.” (Open Secrets)
“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God” (Psalm 42:11; NKJV).
Sometimes we see no way forward. Other times we think we’re getting along fine, thank you. Both are dangerous times. Is there any time when we shouldn’t say, “I need Thy presence every passing hour?”
“For You will save the humble people, but will bring down haughty looks. For You will light my lamp; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness” (Psalm 18:27-28).
