My mind doesn’t rest, but often it’s slow to catch on. Daughter Katie was here from Washington, D.C. and daughter Liz and family came over Saturday afternoon. It was Diane’s birthday. When son-in-law Darren walked in, he immediately told me about a shooting. They had gotten off the interstate and were waiting for a light to change when they heard shots coming from the Waffle House, not far from their car. Everybody ducked down in the car and Darren drove away as quickly as he could. So I’m listening…
Not long afterwards, Christian and Connor, ages 14 and 11, are sitting on the couch near me. Their eyes were vacant. I said, “You look tired.” They were but, closer to reality, they were stunned by what had just happened. “Where’s Oma, your mom and Aunt Katie?” “They’re on the front porch talking about the shooting. My slow mind got it, and this Monday I’m brooding over it.
Being near gunfire is totally unprecedented for our family, but what about children growing up with shootings all around them? A report from August 13 said that 98 children had been shot in St. Louis in 2020, 14 had died. Looking at today’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch, I saw no report of the Collinsville shooting, no doubt because a St. Louis police officer had been shot Saturday and died Sunday. Scanning other news this Monday morning, the Chicago Sun Times reports that 54 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, 10 died. I get it, but don’t know what to do about it.
“In the Lord I take refuge; how can you say to my soul, ‘Flee like a bird to your mountain, for behold, the wicked bend the bow; they have fitted their arrow to the string to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart; if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?’” (Psalm 11:1-3).
Confrontation is obviously not the answer; it escalates tension and increases the chance of more violence. This crisis is bigger than blaming the other political party. Social unrest is going to continue. Friends, I don’t have a happy bottom line this morning. Only this: “The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven; his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man. The Lord tests the righteous, but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence” (Psalm 11:4-5).
