Happy New Year! Opa here with the five grandsons, or as Oma calls them, the “Cinco de Meyer.” Boys, tell our friends what your favorite Christmas present was.
“Opa, I got a Plasma Car.” “What’s that, Nick?” “A 7-wheeler I can drive through the house.” “Good luck to your house!” “How about you, Jacob?” “Spy goggles.” “Are those like virtual reality goggles?” “Whatever, Opa.”
“Drew?” “Nintendo Switch.” “And what is that?” Tech-savvy Oma chimes in, “It’s like the old Nintendo.” Again, Opa has no clue. “And Connor, was the bear your best present?” “Maybe.” Connor got the bear he’d asked for, a five-foot-tall bear. You should see that bear in the back seat driving home!
“Now to the elder statesman of the Cinco de Meyer, Christian. What gift did you like the best?” “The nerf gun.” “So you’re maturing, but still enjoy shooting people with nerf balls?”
“Interesting none of you said the best gift you got was Jesus. You know in your head that Jesus is God’s gift to us, but right now you don’t want Jesus as much as you want things to play with. I can understand that. That’ll change as you get older, so long as your parents and grandparents keep showing you that Jesus is the most important gift you’ll ever have.”
“Opa, can I shoot you with my nerf gun?” “Didn’t you hear anything I just said?” “Yeah, I did. Can I shoot you?”
The 12-year-old Jesus “increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52). That’s the goal as parents raise God’s children. One of the great things about our five boys is that the churches where they worship are loaded with kids. May they all, like Jesus, grow in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man!
