We call it “mother” nature, but from a biblical point of view nature is not so much our source of life but something God made, just as He made us. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible” (Hebrews 11:3).
Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and last night a massive earthquake in Mexico, are horrifying object lessons for faith. They teach that nature can show the sinfulness that has corrupted all creatures. “For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God” (Romans 8:20).
They teach we cannot find a dependable and trustworthy God in nature. Hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, famine, plagues… “Mother” nature seems to be a cruel witch. To find a kindly God, a Father whom we love, the Bible draws us to His revelation in the work and promises of Jesus Christ. Jesus “is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful words” (Hebrews 1:3). What’s big enough to give meaning to all we experience in life? Trust in Jesus Christ.
Heavenly Father, You have permitted these disasters to befall us. We pray that our faith will not fail us but give us endurance, comfort and hope. Protect the helpless. Bring relief and restoration. We humbly seek Your mercies for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
