Don’t like either candidate for president?
My purpose in these Minutes is spiritual, to offer some thought to stimulate your reflections through the light of the Bible. When it comes to the candidates, the default position is to throw up our hands in despair; “God help us!” “Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish” (Psalm 145:3-4).
Another quotation from James Madison about our republican form of government: “It is vain to say, that enlightened statesmen will be able to adjust these clashing interests, and render them all subservient to the public good. Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm” (Federalist 10). A purpose of government, “that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life” (1 Timothy 2:2), will be advanced by the “down-ballot” you prayerfully consider, the federal, state and local candidates for whom you will vote.
Christians look over the shoulders of candidates and see eternity. “Trust not in rulers; they are but mortal; earthborn they are and soon decay. Vain are their counsels at life’s last portal, when the dark grave engulfs its prey. Since mortals can no help afford, place all your trust in Christ our Lord. Alleluia, alleluia!” Jesus’ church is confident: “God shall help her, and that right early” (Lutheran Service Book, 797, 2; Psalm 46:5, KJV).
