It’s an old sermon illustration. A husband and wife are in their car, the husband driving, and the wife is complaining about the loss of romance in their marriage. “We used to sit so close together in the car when we were first dating.” The husband smiles and says, “I haven’t moved away.”
You and I are the ones who have buckled ourselves in away from God. That’s how deeply sin has corrupted us, but the cosmic Creator is your Re-Creator. “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” (Psalm 8:3-4). As awesome as the heavens are, it is even more awesome that the Creator sends His Son into His fallen creation. “Great indeed is the mystery of godliness. He was manifest in the flesh” (2 Timothy 3:16).
Our new seminarians will hear that and more today in the Opening Service. If you would be so kind, think of them at 10:00 CST today. Perhaps a prayer. Today’s text: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart” (Deuteronomy 6:5-6). Upon our hearts too. The Creator re-creates us in His Son.
