Read in many churches last Sunday, God asks, “To whom then will you compare me?” (Isaiah 40:25).
Now that you ask, God, we do compare You to many things. We often think of You as the Emergency Room, and so we go to You when we need help in some physical problem. We often think of You as our therapist, and so we look to You to get us through our emotional and interpersonal challenges. We often think of You as a celestial Walmart; You’re aisle after aisle of things we want, and always at the cheapest price, always. We often think of You as the doting grandparent, and so we play and fight as our emotions dictate, assuming You won’t stop us. And sometimes we don’t compare You to anything; we’re too busy with more important things.
“Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might…. The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 40:26, 28). When God ministers to our needs, it’s for His glory more than ours. “Were not ten cleansed? Where are the nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God, except this foreigner?” (Luke 17:17-18)
Who is asking you to be awed by the incomparably good God? “God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6).
