August is half over. If you haven’t already, please take significant time off!
Your time off benefits your family. One of my pleasant memories from childhood was August, the month my dad took his vacation. No doubt he did home projects, I can’t remember. Here’s what I do remember: He was home. We were home. To this day, decades later, I’m blessed by the memory of his time off with us.
The Old Testament Sabbath was “to the Lord your God.” (Exodus 20:9-10) “To the Lord your God.” There’s proof aplenty that down time can bless your relationship with God. Jesus’ disciples were sent out to do the Lord’s work, but their spiritual growth came when they weren’t working, when they were with the Lord. “He appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out.” (Mark 3:14). Jesus kept before them the need to stop work and be with Him. “Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.’ For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat.” (Mark 6:31-32) If you spend time with Jesus, people will notice. “They recognized that they had been with Jesus.” (Acts 4:13)
And so it comes full circle. I think the popular word is “holistic.” Down time with Jesus is appreciated by others, most immediately by your family. Don’t waste August with all work!
