What’s in it for me? Ask that question regularly. “What fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed?” (Romans 6:21) Before the Christians in Rome came to understand and believe the Gospel, they were driven by passions, “slaves to sin,” Paul said, headed toward their lasting death. But coming to know Christ and His forgiveness, their bondage changed, slaves now to God, and that right relationship with God produces holiness and eternal life.
What’s in it for me? Ask yourself that when your emotions are luring you into an affair. Ask yourself that when you wake up day after day with a hangover. Ask yourself that when you have purchased so much and still feel so little inside. Ask yourself that when career aspirations drive you to self-serving intrigues. What’s in it for me? To whom are you obedient, your emotions rationalized or to God? It’s about the First Commandment. As you lay out your plans for today, do a double check. “For the wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)
