Liturgical churches observed Trinity Sunday yesterday, some using the fifth-century Athanasian Creed. The creed’s closing words never fail to get the attention of grace-filled Christians. At Jesus’ coming on Judgment Day, “all people will rise again with their bodies and give an account concerning their own deeds. And those who have done good will enter into eternal life, and those who have done evil into eternal fire.”
Politically correct? No. Biblically correct? Yes. 1 Peter 1:17: God the Father “judges impartially according to each one’s deeds.” 2 Corinthians 5:10 is a second example, and there are many more. Faith or works? Answer: Jesus alone! “We were buried with Christ by baptism into death…. One who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him.” (Romans 6:4, 7, 8)
“Thy righteousness, O Christ, alone can cover me; No righteousness avails save that which is of Thee. To whom save Thee, Who canst alone for sin atone, Lord, shall I flee?” (Lutheran Service Book, 565, 5) As the Athanasian Creed confessed several verses earlier, “Christ…suffered for our salvation.” That’s grace!
