“Daaa…. Here comes Jacob. I’m fourth in Cinco de Meyer. I love throwing. I was at Oma and Opa’s last weekend. I found balls. I threw balls. I toddled after them and threw them again. Fun! Sunday they took me to church. Mommy carried me up at communion. I had my baby Legos with me. Big Legos. I threw them. I threw them from the rail to right in front of the altar. Big people chuckled. Opa, you laughed big laughs.”
“Sure did, Jacob, but you probably won’t do it again, not if your parents keep bringing you to church…and I know they will. That’s because church habits are learned. After we get baptized, we learn church habits, hopefully good church habits. Sooner or later you learn that you can’t throw Legos and eat Cheerios in church forever.
“It makes me think, older church people sometimes assume that everybody knows church habits. Maybe everybody did once upon a time but not anymore, especially when more and more people haven’t grown up in church. Often big church people don’t take the time to teach newer people. Like liturgy…”
“Opa, what’s ‘liturgy?’”
“There you go.”
