We’ve all felt a yearning to go home. The young person who goes off to college yearns for the holidays when she can get back home. If you have served in the military, served overseas, or been in combat, you know the yearning for home. Even on vacation, “It’ll be good to get back home.” When we go to work, we look forward to the end of the day when we can go home and to rest. Lent reminds us that we’re on a journey, a journey to our eternal home with God. Jesus is our way home.
These coming weeks you’ll rehearse in church and personal devotion what the Scriptures say about Jesus’ suffering to save us from our sins. Don’t be superficial about the mood of Lent. While we figuratively get down into ashes to repent for our sins, our joy is that Jesus lifts us up with forgiveness. Lent doesn’t cancel Easter. Scriptures radiate the joy and confidence of Christ’s resurrection and ascension. It’s ashes to glory, dust to imperishable, glorious heavenly bodies. Heartbeat by heartbeat, we’re on our way home. That’s why we love Jesus. He’s the way.
