Yes indeed, our modern communication technologies can be a great blessing…but they also present mighty challenges. I’m teaching a class on God’s Law (“Thou shalt” and “Thou shalt not”) and God’s Gospel (Good news for you in Jesus Christ). Tuesday we talked about “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.”
Faith trusts the Good News that God forgives our sins for Jesus’ sake…but faith does not remove the sin in our heart. That sin stirs deep within us and tries to surface in our actions. That’s why we pray for grace to resist temptation. “Resist the devil and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). In the old days of snail mail, you’d be tempted to write poisonous words to someone…but time gave you an opportunity to consider the consequences before you mailed your diatribe. These days when your heart is roused with anger against someone, you can act on it immediately, skewering them immediately on the internet. There’s no “but.” I want to write this…but would it be God-pleasing?
More than ever: deliberate will power. “Thy will be done” in my life, until I’m finally home and freed from sin.
