In grade school our daughter Katie took cello lessons, but time marched on. When she went off to college and life, the cello sat unused until we finally sold it. Cellist Avram Lavin said, “The cello is a solo instrument, though not as popular as the violin or piano. It would be hard to rate instruments in terms of importance, because if you take any of them away, you have no orchestra.” (New York Times, February 21, 2003; B34).
That’s a good description of Christian life. Individualism is rampant in America but Christianity is about community, God’s people, about each of us as a member of the Body of Christ. When you were baptized all heaven fixed its loving gaze on you. Now you’re grown and have your special responsibilities to others. Whatever your duties may be, play your part attuned to Jesus Christ and together we will be God’s orchestra, blessing those around us. As Martin Franzmann taught us to pray, “That in these gray and latter days there may be those whose life is praise, each life a high doxology unto the holy Trinity.”
