“We take every thought captive to obey Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)
How many thoughts we have every day! Our minds seldom slow down; that is a great temptation of our times. Our devices keep us constantly connected, bringing the thoughts of others to us and luring us to reply with our own thinking.
Will we take every one of today’s thoughts captive to what Jesus tells us? St. Paul did. We consider Jesus often enough, hear the stories of long ago and wonder what it may mean for today, but pondering the Sermon on the Mount is not the same as obeying it. To only consider Jesus’ words is idolatry. “I will judge when I’ll follow Jesus.”
The Spirit struggles to put lenses on our eyes and aids in our ears so that everything coming to us is intercepted by the Word of Christ. “I will meditate on Your precepts. May my heart be blameless in Your statutes.” (Psalm 119:78, 80) Imagine that every email and post, everything you hear would be filtered by obedience to Jesus Christ? You would be transformed. “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You.” (Isaiah 26:3)
