"All creatures that have breath and motion," wrote the poet John Mentzer. Our dog "Ferdie" has breath and lots of motion. Walking, sniffing, greeting people, chasing rabbits or squirrels…he’s beautiful running at full speed. And yes, he also moves to beg for foodThe Bible doesn't speak very favorably about dogs, caricaturing them as wild, vicious scavengers. There is, however, one hint dog-lovers welcome. A woman said to Jesus, "the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master's table" (Matthew 15:27). Perhaps some dogs were domesticated. At least for that woman the dog served as a reminder of the goodness of God for all people.
The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is on and this evening’s program includes Ferdie’s family, the Golden Retrievers. Our boy will probably be sleeping in front of the TV, no doubt with his teddy bear. A night at home, and if we reflect, a reminder of this marvelous creation.
"All creatures that have breath and motion, that throng the earth, the sea, the sky, now join me in my heart's devotion, help me to raise God's praises high. My utmost powers can ne'er aright declare the wonders of His might."
