One of the regular Bible class teachers at our church asked me to substitute for him yesterday. I was glad to do so.
Picture the setting…and I’m guessing it’s not too different from Bible classes you have visited. The class met in a classroom. All the students sat at tables or school desks. All had a book in front of them, the Bible. The class met for an appointed time, in our case 9:20 until 10:10 (actually longer, because I kept talking!). Our topic?
How Christianity has become something for the head, too often ignoring the heart. In Mark 12 a theologian, called a “scribe,” asked Jesus what commandment is most important. Jesus answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” And “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” The theologian approved the answer. Then Jesus said, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” (Mark 12:28-34)
Head knowledge: Not far from the kingdom, but not there yet. Go back to what I wrote about yesterday’s Bible class. See how heady it is?
