About the government shutdown… Carlock is a small town of 500 northwest of Bloomington, Illinois. North of Carlock you find two cemeteries, White Oak and Oak Grove. Farthest north is White Oak, founded by Abraham Carlock, such a staunch partisan that his gravestone says, “Here sleeps the old Democrat.” Closer to town you find another cemetery, Oak Grove, established by Philip Benson, who was a member of the Whig Party and then of the new Republican Party. Benson and Carlock were such strong political rivals that it’s said they wouldn’t let members of the other party into their own homes…or apparently into their cemeteries. Democrats were buried in White Oak and Republicans in Oak Grove.
In 2002 Illinois State Comptroller Dan Hynes said, “…it’s hard to imagine a time when you were buried in a plot of land based on your politics. It’s a great story and one worth keeping alive.” We seem to be doing just that with the government shutdown. (“Graveyards.com”) Romans 13:1 teaches that government is a divine institution, which means politicians will give account to God for their stewardship of His purposes. Remember the cemeteries of Carlock!
