“Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) Jesus knows there are times when we’re weary and heavy-laden. It’s in weary and heavy laden times that we are more likely to go to God.
My mom used to say, “You kids are driving me batty!” Interpersonal relationships wear us down…. “Come unto Me.” What’s eating at you? Addiction, anxiety, aspirations for your career or family, debt? It eats away at your insides. “Come unto Me.” What’s killing you, literally killing you? Cancer, heart disease, again addiction, age? It’s coming to take you away, no ha-ha. “Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer. Can you find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness. Take it to the Lord in prayer.”
Jesus doesn’t say, “Go into yourself.” Going into ourselves becomes a blessing when it leads us out of ourselves for help. “Come unto Me” means get out of your self-obsession. “Come unto Me” is your promise of rest.
