Coming upon a man possessed by demons, Jesus said, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!” When Jesus asked, “What is your name?” he replied, “My name is legion, for we are many.” (Mark 5:8-9)
How does a person come under the oppression of not one but many demons? Thanks to Seminarian Nathan Scheck for this thoughtful answer. Demons, devils, personal but unseen forces of evil use sins to lure us away from God. People invariably think about the big sins, promiscuity, bribery, abuse, murder, and the like as the sins that enslave us but what about the little sins? White lies, lusting looks, malicious gossip, little cheatings in business… When we commit these “acceptable” sins, we let ourselves be enslaved bit-by-bit until evil gets control of our life. The demons oppressing us have then become legion and it’ll take a miracle to get us back to God. So for today, keep them out one-by-one through reflection. “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23-24)
