Report: What I learned on my pre-Summer Vacation.
I did build a section of fence for Katie and Charlie to corral their dog, observed Memorial Day, and delivered the funeral sermon for family friend Paul Bohnenstiehl, but most important: I didn’t use my work cell-phone, iPad or computer. I didn’t even take them with me. I did carry my personal iPhone, by which a handful of people could reach me if the world ended, but then why bother? What I learned from this experience: If I (maybe you?) want to have Christian calm amidst life and work, don’t let myself (maybe yourself?) always be available via technology and social media. I’ve got to have boundaries that give me quiet time to think. You too? Prostituting quiet time to constant accessibility may make you feel important but is it worth the loss of Christian calm? “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose heart is stayed on Thee.” (Isaiah 26:4)
Now that I’m back at work, I’ll try to keep up the discipline. Work e-mails during the day, OK, but not 24/7. That said, should the world end, you feel free to write me anytime.
