I was privileged last Saturday to perform the wedding ceremony for Kent Muniz and Lauren Popov. They are fine people from fine families, the church setting was magnificent, and the spring weather beautiful. It all made for a truly satisfying day. Below I share with you one paragraph from my wedding homily.
“The Bible says, ‘Unless the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.’ (Psalm 127:1) There’s a beautiful story in the Bible that we hear every Easter, the story of the Emmaus disciples. Two disciples were going home. One was named Cleopas; the name of the other? We don’t know. Could it have been a woman? Could it have been Cleopas’ wife? We do know that the two disciples were puzzled. They were trying to understand the relevancy of faith. They were followers of Jesus but their faith wasn’t helping them understand what was going on, at least not yet. A stranger came up and they started talking about their doubts. I’m not here to encourage you to wear your religion on your sleeve. In fact, Jesus warns against public shows of piety (Matthew 6:5-8; 16-18). But I do encourage you to ask questions when your faith doesn’t seem relevant. Just as the Emmaus disciples got into a conversation with someone who knew, talk to an older Christian, an experienced Christian, someone who has used the years to get to know the Bible… talk things through with a person like that, a person you trust. Well, the “stranger” got the disciples thinking that maybe the faith is relevant to real life. When they drew near their house, they invited the “stranger” into their home. It was in their home that the Lord Jesus revealed himself to them. In their home He showed them the relevance and joy of the resurrection. It will be in your home that the Spirit of the Lord Jesus demonstrates that this faith really works for daily life.
