Preachers are prone to talk about God in cosmic terms but it’s in specific, mundane places that God comes to us. Your home, that place with walls and windows and floors and doors… That’s a prime place where the heavenly Father cares for you His child. When the weather is cold or hot, snowy or rainy, your home keeps you safe and comfortable. After a long day of work, your home is a welcome place of rest. When you’re hungry, the refrigerator and table of your home offer you food. Do you thank God before you eat? When you’re not feeling well, physically or emotionally, your home is where our Father shows love and care for you through the love and care of family. When family members wrong one another, your home is the place of speaking and showing forgiveness, just as God in Christ has forgiven you. Your home is the place where you can entertain, inviting in friends and family just as God has brought you us into His family.
We probably don’t think about it when we drive through town, but every house we see, every apartment we see, is ultimately a gift to its inhabitants from God. Our homes are places where God blesses us and it’s through homes, one after another, street upon street upon street, in community after community that God uses little places like ours to bring stability to society. “God setteth the solitary in families.” (Psalm 68:6) “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.” (Psalm 127:1)
And this: Homes experience sadness, don’t we know. One sadness is the diagnosis of childhood cancer. Next week some of us are going to have our heads shaved to raise money to help fight childhood cancers. If you’d like to donate, please go to
