Monday begins again the stresses and strains of life that sometimes leave us feeling like we’re coming apart. You get deluged with e-mails, your “to do” list is often longer than the hours of the day, sometimes you feel pestered, a lack of planning on someone else’s part makes an emergency for you, and on and on goes the grind. Some days you feel you’re about to come apart.
The Bible tells us that Jesus’ disciples were so busy dealing with people that they couldn’t even find time to eat. Jesus saw them wearing down and gave His prescription: “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place and rest a while.” (Mark 8:31) That’s the old language of the King James Translation, not as smooth reading as more modern translations, but I chose it to play on “coming apart.” When people and work have you ready to “come apart,” do just that. “Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29) It may take only a few minutes at your desk to meditate upon a Bible verse of comfort and encouragement, perhaps a short walk over the lunch hour to experience the greatness of creation, just some kind of departure from the normal to a different mental place. When the stresses and strains have you feeling like Humpty Dumpty, “come apart,” rest, and get it back together.
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.” (Isaiah 26:4)
