When my sister-in-law died several years ago, the funeral procession was lined up at the church to go to the cemetery. All the cars were ready to go, all except one. Since my brother was being driven in the limo, his car was to be driven by two cousins but they couldn’t figure out how to start the car. It was keyless.
As you and I prepare for our final procession, we need the key to open heaven to us. From Revelation 3:7-8, “He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts,” says, “I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My name.”
Today’s O Antiphon: “O Key of David and scepter of the house of Israel, You open and no one can close, You close and no one can open: Come and rescue the prisoners who are in darkness and the shadow of death.”
“When we on that final journey go that Christ is for us preparing, we’ll gather in song, our hearts aglow, all joy of the heavens sharing, and walk in the light of God’s own place with angels His name adoring.” (LSB, 503, 5)
