“There was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7) And no room in Dale and Diane’s house either. Joseph and pregnant Mary came to our front door looking for a place to stay but they were shooed off.
Last evening we learned a new Christmas custom, Las Posadas. Las Posadas began in 1587 in Mexico and continues today in many countries. Concordia Seminary’s Center for Hispanic Studies led adults and children from place to place asking for lodging, just as Mary and Joseph sought a place to stay. Posada means “inn” or “place of lodging.” At each home, someone dressed in ancient garb acted as the homeowner and chased them away. At our house this verse was read: “The true Light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world and was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own people did not receive Him. But to all who receive Him, who believe in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:10-12) Chased away, the pilgrims prayed and journeyed on, finally finding a place to stay. Las Posadas reminded us there was room in the inn, just no room in the heart.
