This is a terrible, terrible story. A young mother in St. Louis beat her 13-month-old son Tyler to death because he was crying and "wouldn't lay down, wouldn't go back to sleep." She ditched the body in a nearby cemetery.
Someplace we picked up the idea that life surely gets better, that we're only a thing or two away from heaven on earth. If only...the right job, the right spouse, more money, no crying.... We're only a thing or two away. But then terrible news hits us, maybe directly or maybe it's a news report about someone else that stops us and scares us, like the story of little Tyler. 1 Peter 1:5 teaches that our safe keeping is in faith. The passage evokes the image of a fortress and that's what the assurances and the promises of the Bible are intended to be. "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1).
"I walk in danger all the way. The thought shall never leave me,
That Satan who has marked his prey is plotting to deceive me.
That foe with hidden snares may seize me unawares
If e'er I fall to watch and pray. I walk in danger all the way."
