For many Americans Labor Day was a temporary diversion, a passing moment to forget you have no job, no regular labor. Over 20 million Americans are…out of work…too discouraged to look…or working some part-time that isn’t enough for what you need. Of course, you know the economic impact.
Consider the spiritual impact. “Thou shalt not kill” means we should do what we can to enhance the life of others. That doesn’t happen when you’re not bringing home a paycheck. “Thou shalt not commit adultery” is about making marriage work. Tragically, unemployment weakens marriage, not only weakens but can ruin an otherwise good marriage. “Thou shalt not steal” means material things are of value, but if you can’t bring basic stuff home…
Whether you’ve heard him or not, the devil whispers you’re not pulling your weight. His goal is your despair. Unemployment is spiritual warfare. Johann Gramann: “For as a tender father has pity on His children here, God in His arms will gather all who are His in childlike fear. He knows how frail our powers, who but from dust are made….” May I suggest that dealing successfully with your unemployment begins by recognizing the spiritual temptation you’re in? Then search aggressively for a job…but always thinking spiritually, “Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.”
