My deep thanks to Dr. Thomas Troeger of Yale Divinity School for his lectures on the Concordia campus and especially for the following story.
Dr. Troeger was a patient in the intensive care unit of the hospital. It was morning and as he awoke, he heard banging. Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang. Regular and irritating. Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang. It must be the workers driving piles for the new addition, so he thought. "Dear God. I'm in the hospital. Please stop that banging!"
Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang. It didn't stop. As I said, Dr. Troeger was waking up. As he became more alert he remembered that his surgeon had said the new valve in his heart would make a regular pounding noise and he promised it would quiet down in time. "Dear God, cancel that last prayer."
Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang. Each sound another heartbeat of life from God. The heart beats 100,000 times a day. Multiply that by the days and years of your life. Dr. Troeger remarked that he's never gotten a bill from God for any of his heartbeats. Has God billed you? Every heartbeat is a gift to you from your loving Creator.
